Some disturbing parallels

I'm writing a paper on secession for a US History class.  Part of that assignment is to present a chosen state's Ordinance of Secession (OoS)  http://www.lsjunction.com/docs/secesson.htm
My group was assigned TX, and I must pinpoint the states stated reasoning for it.  Many of these illogical assertions parallel the victim bullying, victim blaming, wrong recusing, and fact denying assertions of the pro pit bull movement.

First, it claims the union is denying a person's state-constitution rights; it is a Texan's right to own slaves!  So, too, it is with pit bull fanatics  who rally against BSL; it is a RIGHT to own a fighting breed dog no matter the cost; however, reasonable people understand this is not so.

It should not be so.  Why?  Because we have a long standing precedent of regulating animal ownership for the collective safety of the communities we live in.  A person cannot own apex predator animals in the community at large; you cannot bring a bear or a tiger into highly populated area for the undeniable threat they pose to the surrounding people.

In many places, other animals are restricted from city/town propers for the same reason.  For example, in some areas, you must obtain a permit to bring a horse into town.  These animals are irrefutably less vicious* than pit bulls.  However, their biology makes them powerful and skittish.  Pit bull biology makes the dogs powerful, bold, unstable, and devastatingly destructive when they go off.
*note; there are equestrian related deaths, however these are the result of a rider without a helmet falling from the horse and sustaining fatal head injuries.  The horse does not attack a person, or consciously seek to harm them.

A person cannot import exotics into certain areas because they are highly problematic as an invasive species--they threaten the ecosystems around them, indirectly so to humans.  It is not so as pit bulls. You'd be hard pressed to make a week without an occurrence of a pitbulls breaking off lead/containment to attack members of the community.

Another portion of the ordinance classify the few fatal skirmishes between law enforcement protecting freed slaves as "murders". It is truly sad when anyone or thing dies as a result of violence, but classifications of homicide are issued according to context (self-defense, unforeseeable accidents, and acting under military orders are not classified as murder, for example).

Even when a person's child or animal is mercilessly attacked and they have no choice but to kill the dog to end the attack(1), even when a police officer is charged full-on by a pit bull--even when said pitbull had just commenced an attack on another person or animal, even when police fire upon a pitbull because the pit bulls own family is being mauled relentlessly and BEG him to do it.... (2)  Pit bull fanatics cry foul, make a martyr of the aggressor, label the officer a murder, hold protests against him, and demand his termination. (3)  Acting as a public servant to fulfill their sworn duty to protect and serve, or to save yourself or your loved ones from a vicious attacker hell-bent on killing is not murder.

Secessionists cried natural law and that slavery is a divine institution sanctified by The Creator.  We all know this is not so.  Scientific evidence--fact--proves to us that differences among the races are arbitrary At best.  It's plain physiology.

The scientific physiology of a pit bull is riddled with dangerous biological markers. (4)  If you've ever heard someone call a pit bull a "ticking time bomb", this is why; Pitbulls are endowed with brain structures that are exaggeratedly different; their impulse control is greatly diminished, Their brain rewards idiopathic (unprovoked, suddenly without warning, and extreme in severity and duration) aggression with a powerful cocktail of opioids and dopamine.  It physically rewards violence.  Their blood clotting factor is supreme above all canids  to keep them "in the fight" for as long as possible.

The observable precedent of behavior (which we all acknowledge as being able to be discerned as innate through observation in collies herding, labs retrieving, etc.) that plays out on a daily basis is that these dogs  Are spontaneously violent, their attacks incredibly implacable, and that they are not target specific.

They will maul people--any person, including family, not solely aggressors or abusers), animals of every kind, and even vehicles when they are in the zone.  Science proves pit bulls are a significantly elevated risk to life and limb just as it proves that, among human races, no one race is smarter, stronger, or cleaner than another.

The OoS states the union was on a power trip and sought to destroy southern institutions.
Fanatics howl that SABSL proponents are seeking to--for no reason imaginable--to destroy dog ownership and that other breeds are ominously next.  This is a wholly unsubstantiated claim designed to recast those championing a safe society for all as hate filled extremists who relish in "destruction" for destruction's sake... And wholly ignores the fact that even pit bulls themselves benefit from regulation. In areas where even mild BSL is present, the rate of severe bite injuries and fatalities plummet dramatically, leaving less "negative press" for the breed, in addition to plummeting dog-fighting, dog-abuse,  crammed-to-the-gills (and therefore compromised standards of care) shelters, and pit bull euthanasia rates. (5)

In the OoS, there is also an assertion that abolition fractured and divided people, and while this is true, that does not make abolition wrong.  Disagreement is not grounds for ignoring an issue.  Anything but.

The South issued that the north was acting vicious economically, seeking to destroy southern industry to somehow (the regions largely traded wholly different products--manufacturing, fishing, timber, textiles, etc.  In the north, sprawling plantations and cash crops in the south) fill their own pockets.  Basically, it's all about money.  Pit bull fanatics claim victims are just frauds seeking to solicit charity moneys for personal gain, and even proclaim that dogsbite.org pays large sums of money to people to "make up stories".  This ignores the fact that behind every attack is a victim with very real, crippling, lifelong, or fatal injuries.

These injuries are evidenced by witnesses and medical treatment, and they are not "easy" ones--missing eyes, ears, noses (6), scalps (7), limbs (8), permanent nerve damage (9), loss of function (10), brain damage (11), etc..  Many of these People have medical bills that exponentially soar above the alleged "bribe", additionally, singular bribes would be grossly ineffective in "converts".

A much more effective and profitable endeavor—taking a page from the pitbull advocacy play book) would be to generate propaganda films and "documentaries" (another parallel--the early 1900s saw the production of race based "documentaries" espousing the alleged inferiority Of non-whites (12), peppered with gross amounts of junk "science" to support it.) and aggressively and Consistently make media fluff plays.

When Kevin Vicente had his face partially torn off, his family set up a fund that received a measly 5K for months, while a "save Mickey"--the dog that mauled him--campaign received tens of thousands of dollars and support in a few weeks. (13) This is not uncommon... It is substantially more lucrative to generate money through a pro pit bull scam than a victim plea.

The Name Change Game; Staffordshire terrier = pit bull

Have you ever heard the question, or wondered for yourself;
"What's the difference between Staffordshire Terriers and Pit Bulls?"
(or any variation thereof)
People often encounter the mention of Staffordshire terriers in any arena of pitbull conversation.  Staffordshires are referenced as a wholly separate breed from pitbulls, and on this faulty premise, people typically make several assumptions/assertions;
  1. The given; these are different breeds.  Ergo, many traits--especially behavior--may or may not be shared, any more so than any other breed from one to the other.  (That in itself is a faulty premise but that's a post for another day.)
  2. They have different histories and purposes.
  3. People cannot tell one from the other, or they are often confused for one another.
  4. Because of this, people confuse the two, the statistics on pitbull/staffordshire attacks can't possibly be accurate or relevant.
  5. This claim is unspoken, but heavily implied by the aforementioned; BSL (breed specific legislation) does not work.  Why it's relevant is because one of the very few hats anti-BSL advocates hangs its hat on is the (statistically) insignificant drop in bite/attack rates since the UK banned pitbulls.  This might, perhaps, somehow signify something if Staffordshire terriers and pitbulls were truly wholly different animals, as different from each other as, say, Cocker Spaniels and malamutes, but an unspoken fact is important to bear: the pitbull ban did not include Staffordshire terriers.

Why does that matter?
Because Staffordshire terriers are about as different from pit bulls as chocolate labs are to yellow labs.

The AKC doesn't recognize pitbulls by their common title; the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT for short), but does recognize the breed under the more formal and more confusing title; American Staffordshire terrier (often nicknamed 'AmStaff' 'Am Staff' or even the slightly more transparent 'Am Bully').
It is the same breed.
The AKC initially refused to acknowledge and set a standard for the pitbull breed precisely because of its undivorceable dog-fighting origin and purpose.  (In fact, the AKC's initial rejection was the whole reason the UKC was formed--to serve as a kennel club that recognized fighting breed dogs, and in fact, a pitbull had to have won three fights to be eligible for recognition(1).)

The American Kennel Club advertises the American Staffordshire's history as thus(2);
Until the early 19th century, the Bulldog used for bull baiting in England was more active and longer-legged than the breed as we know it today. It is thought that the cross of this older Bulldog and a game terrier breed created the Staffordshire Terrier. Originally called the Bull-and-Terrier Dog, Half and Half or Pit Dog, it became known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in England. When accepted for AKC registration in 1936, the name changed to American Staffordshire Terrier to reflect the heavier American type and to distinguish them as separate breeds.
The history of the pitbull:  When bull-baiting was outlawed in England, gambling sadists turned to pitting dogs against each other... and for this purpose, they crossed the Olde English Bulldogge (spelling verbatim)--for aggression and strength, especially jaw power--with terrier breeds for speed, agility, tenacity, and prey-drive.  When dog-fighting was outlawed, many dogmen took their bloodsport overseas to the Americas, where it had yet to be outlawed.  This 'migration and separation' was a historically  recent occurrence.  Aside from getting a little bigger than their English ancestors (which was also a tandem phenomena in humans as well--but in both, only marginally at best), the differences are negligible.

Every line up to but the last is the pitbull's history (3), verbatim... all the key players and words are present;

  • bull-baiting
  • english bulldogs
  • terriers
  • bull and terrier
  • pit dog
But there are heavy omissions.  The entirety of the reason for the breed's inception, for example... why exactly it is these dog 'fanciers' decided to cross bulldogs with terriers?? DOG.FIGHTING.  No other reason.  Adequate and fantastic family, guard, farm, hunting,  tracking, retrieving, assistance breeds... all already existed (many by centuries, if not more), were present, and accessible in the area.  People were much more pragmatic about dogs in those times. As mercenary as it sounds to modern cream puffs; they were a means to an end.

Why take a smaller,  more controllable, portable, sustainable, and companionable dog that 'got the job done' (whether it be herding, ratting, etc.) and make it larger, more unpredictable, more costly in resources (feed, etc.), and more difficult to handle?  It sure wasn't for gently guiding livestock or babysitting, I can tell you that.  Disturbingly,
especially the trusting due given them, the UKC and AKC won't.  They even go one step further and continue endangering families and perpetuating blatantly false perceptions that are getting pets and people maimed and killed on a mass scale;
Right Breed for You?The Am Staff is a people-oriented dog that thrives when he is made part of the family and given a job to do. Although friendly, this breed is loyal to his family and will protect them from any threat. His short coat is low-maintenance, but regular exercise and training is necessary.
A mess of Staffordshire owner-victims would beg to differ about the breed's loyalty and threat level.  Comb news archives (4) and you'll drown in the overwhelming testimony of this.  Opponents of BSL like to claim that BSL 'doesn't work' by citing the fairly undiminished number of bites and serious attacks overseas.  Perhaps  that is because BSL wasn't implemented to the fullest as it pertains to fighting breeds--Staffordshires are legal there, and so all the pitbull owners have to do is relabel the same dog and it passes for the other breed because... well, the other breed isn't really 'another breed'.  It is the same dog, different name.

Sadly, too many people take kennel clubs to be the be-all-end-all of dog knowledge and professionalism.  It is important to remember these are not charity groups or educational institutions... these are, first, foremost, and always, a business.  These groups operate with financial agendas.  Papers, dog shows, breeding licenses, schutzhund events... there is money in dogs--if you're working through a Kennel Club.  It's rather telling, that the next line under the breed propaganda is, replete with link to purchase;
If you are considering purchasing an American Staffordshire Terrier puppylearn more here.
The UKC's description and history of the pitbull not only omits the inherent danger of pitbulls as companion animals, but goes a step further to wholly falsify the breed history and purpose.  They assert the dogs were bred for farm work or boar hunting, but fail to provide historical evidence supporting this.  Even pro-pitbull literature peppered with the usual arsenal of deflections, deceptions, and excuses acknowledge the breed's fighting origins. (5)
Given the earlier mention of how the UKC came to be, it should be no surprise that the fruit of men who had no compunctions about disregarding the well-being of living beings for sadistic spectacle and monetary gain... would have equally no conscience about continuing to mislead and endanger countless more, despite the snowballing death-toll rising with it.

The image--interesting to note that it is not of a 'whole' dog but one with the cropped ears and docked tail that typify fighting dogs and tend to change the whole visage of an animal--accompanying the AKC's history of the Staffordshire terrier is;

looks like s/he's got a few long lost siblings here:

oh wait... those are purebred pitbulls

How arbitrary are the differences between these allegedly separate breeds?  From inception of a breed standard in both the UKC and AKC, people have, and CONTINUE TO double-register (5) their dogs as pitbulls and Staffordshires.  The very same dog can have an AKC paper reading 'Staffordshire' and a UKC paper reading 'APBT'.  For example, this female purebred pitbull (left) won best in show in BOTH an AKC Staffordshire placing and a UKC show:
The breeder from which she springs profusely brags the dual awards her dogs routinely receive.  (6)
 This is wholly legal and acceptable, and using the Staffordshire moniker is an oft employed means of skirting breed restrictions.  The average landlord may be frustratingly thwarted by this.  They look at the animal and know it is a pitbull, but may not know what to do if someone shoves a 'Staffordshire' breed paper in their face, unawares that they are officially one in the same in the professional dog circuits.  Flagrantly disguising breed via name is far from a new tactic meant to confuse the public at large. (7)

Breed Standards:
Comparing and Contrasting the AKC's American Staffordshire Terrier and the UKC's American Pit Bull Terrier's breed standards

AKC
Head: Medium length, deep through, broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop; and ears are set high
UKC
Head: It is large and broad, giving the impression of great power, but it is not disproportionate to the size of the body. Viewed from the front, the head is shaped like a broad, blunt wedge. When viewed from the side, the skull and muzzle are parallel to one another and joined by a well defined, moderately deep stop. Supraorbital arches over the eyes are well defined but not pronounced. The head is well chiseled, blending strength, elegance, and character.  Very Serious Fault: Overly large, heavy heads.

AKC
Ears - Cropped or uncropped, the latter preferred. Uncropped ears should be short and held rose or half prick. Full drop to be penalized.
UKC
Ears - Ears are high set and may be natural or cropped without preference. Prick, or flat, wide ears* are not desired.
*aka full drop

AKC
Eyes - Dark and roundlow down in skull and set far apart. No pink eyelids.
UKC
Eyes - Eyes are medium size, round and set well apart and low on the skull. All colors are equally acceptable except blue, which is a serious fault. Haw should not be visible.

AKC
Muzzle- Medium length, rounded on upper side to fall away abruptly below eyes. Jaws well defined. Under-jaw to be strong and have biting power. Lips close and even, no looseness. Upper teeth to meet tightly outside lower teeth in front. Nose definitely black.
UKC
Muzzle - The muzzle is broad and deep with a very slight taper from the stop to the nose, and a slight falling away under the eyes. The length of muzzle is shorter than the length of skull, with a ratio of approximately 2:3. The topline of the muzzle is straight. The lower jaw is well developed, wide and deep. Lips are clean and tight  The American Pit Bull Terrier has a complete set of evenly spaced, white teeth meeting in a scissors bite.  Faults: Snipey muzzle; flews; weak lower jaw. The nose is large with wide, open nostrils. The nose may be any color.
Here, here we see the first and only definitive difference between the breed standards--the color of a dog's nose. Asserting that the trait of nose pigmentation is somehow indicative of a behavior aspect of form meets function* is a  task that would best even champions of  mental gymnastics.
*See dog behaviorist Alexandra Semyonova's"Heritability of behavior" (10) and the relevant section on  physical-behavioral body conformation

AKC
Neck: Heavyslightly archedtapering from shoulders to back of skullNo looseness of skinMedium length.
UKC
Neck:  The neck is of moderate length and muscular. There is a slight arch at the crest. The neck widens gradually from where it joins the skull to where it blends in to well laid-back shoulders. The skin on the neck is tight and without dewlap.
Faults: Neck too thin or weak; ewe neck; dewlap.

AKC
Shoulders: Strong and muscular with blades wide and sloping.
UKC
Shoulders:  The shoulder blades are long, wide, muscular, and well laid back. The upper arm is roughly equal in length to the shoulder blade and joins it at an apparent right angle.

AKC
Back: Fairly short. Slight sloping from withers to rump with gentle short slope at rump to base of tail.
UKC
Back:  The back is strong and firm. The topline inclines very slightly downward from the withers to a broad, muscular, level back.

AKC
Body: Well-sprung ribs, deep in rear. All ribs close together. Chest deep and broad.  Loins slightly tucked.
UKC
Body:  The chest is deep, well filled in, and moderately wide with ample room for heart and lungs, but the chest should never be wider than it is deep. The forechest does not extend much beyond the point of shoulder. The ribs extend well back and are well sprung from the spine, then flattening to form a deep body extending to the elbows. The topline inclines very slightly downward from the withers to a broad, muscular, level back. The loin is short, muscular and slightly arched to the top of the croup, but narrower than the rib cage and with a moderate tuck-up. The croup is slightly sloping downward.

AKC
Tail: Short in comparison to size, low set, tapering to a fine point; not curled or held over back. Not docked.
UKC
Tail:  The tail is set on as a natural extension of the topline, and tapers to a point. When the dog is relaxed, the tail is carried low and extends approximately to the hock. When the dog is moving, the tail is carried level with the backline. When the dog is excited, the tail may be carried in a raised, upright position (challenge tail), but never curled over the back (gay tail). Fault: Long tail (tail tip passes beyond point of hock).

AKC
Legs:  Forelegs set rather wide apart to permit chest development. The front legs should be straight, large or round bones, pastern uprightNo semblance of bend in front. Hindquarters well-muscled, let down at hocks, turning neither in nor out. Feet of moderate size, well-arched and compact. Gait must be springy but without roll or pace.
UKC
Legs:  The forelegs are strong and muscular. The elbows are set close to the body. Viewed from the front, the forelegs are set moderately wide apart and perpendicular to the ground. The pasterns are short, powerful, straight, and flexible. When viewed in profile, the pasterns are nearly erect
Faults: Upright or loaded shoulders; elbows turned outward or tied-in; down at the pasterns; front legs bowed; wrists knuckled over; toeing in or out.The feet are round, proportionate to the size of the dog, well arched, and tight. Pads are hard, tough, and well cushioned. Dewclaws may be removed.

AKC
Coat: Short, close, stiff to the touch, and glossy.
UKC
Coat:  The coat is glossy and smooth, close, and moderately stiff to the touch.  Faults: Curly, wavy, or sparse coat.

AKC
Color: Any color, solid, parti, or patched is permissible, but all white, more than 80 per cent white, black and tan, and liver not to be encouraged.
UKC
Color: Any color, color pattern, or combination of colors is acceptable, except for merle(11)
Merle A marking pattern, used in conjunction with another color, to describe Shetland Sheepdogs, Collies, Great Danes, and Australian Shepherds. The color is characterized by a marbling effect of dark patches against a lighter background of the same color

AKC
Size: Height and weight should be in proportion. A height of about 18 to 19 inches at shoulders for the male and 17 to 18 inches for the female is to be considered preferable.
UKC
Size:  The American Pit Bull Terrier must be both powerful and agile; overall balance and the correct proportion of weight to height, therefore, is far more important than the dog’s actual weight and/or height.
Desirable weight for a mature male in good condition is between 35 and 60 pounds. Desirable weight for a mature female in good condition is between 30 and 50 pounds.
As a general and approximate guideline only, the desirable height range for mature males is from 18 to 21 inches at the withers; for mature females it is from 17 to 20 inches at the withers.
It is important to note that dogs over or under these weight and height ranges are not to be penalized unless they are disproportionately massive or rangy.
Very Serious Fault: Excessively large or overly massive dogs and dogs with a height and/or weight so far from what is desired as to compromise health, structure, movement and physical ability.

So here we have it, a detailed description defining each breed; identical in every which way sans one--the color of the dog's nose.  It's a stark irony that pitbull fanatics claim people who distinguish between breeds as it pertains to their heavily contrasting traits... (for no fool could confuse the very different breed standards for, say, a dalmatian versus a chow, a chow versus a beagle, a  St.Bernard versus a greyhound, or a chihuahua versus a pitbull) ...and yet are so adamant about separating, scrutinizing, and distinguishing between dogs with the very same sort of arbitrary differences that compose human 'race' (i.e. color, pigment, geographical origin or placement.)  These deliberate confusions may be why Miami Dade County, Florida, applies 47 different points of identification when scrutinizing dogs as it pertains to the pitbull ban. (12)  They apply the race argument where it is most faulty, and are conspicuously quiet where it would reveal contradiction and hypocrisy.

I'm a real Yorkie.
No... a Staffordshire is to a pitbull as a chocolate lab is to a golden or black lab.  These are not genuinely different breeds; just the same dogs, each of a different color  stripe.  This is the only adequate canine comparison to the very arbitrary pigmental differences among human races, and it does not work in the pitbull  fantasists' favor, because it truly deepens the scope of the breed specific problem.  This is why, when I speak of pitbulls, I am speaking inclusively of any of the deceptive attempts at other-breed-names (6)...  when I say pitbull, I include APBT, Am Staffs, bull dogs, pit terriers, American Bull Terriers, Yankee terriers, St. Francis terriers, New Yorkies, American bulldogs, Staffordshire Terriers, and any other ridiculous or diversionary name for the
bloodsport blend of English bulldogs and terriers that emerged post-bull-baiting-bans.  These are what I speak of when I use the term 'bully breeds'.

So what does this all come down to, when referring to what these names denote?  Geography, and maybe, weight.  A Staffordshire is a pitbull across the Atlantic.  An APBT is a pitbull in America.  It may or may not be a little heavier in general, but that is understandable considering the obesity epidemic in the US (just stating facts, not meaning to disparage!).  These differences are arbitrary at best; being a Staffordshire terrier makes a ancestral-pit-fighting dog no more different an animal from an APBT than an American man moving to London makes him a different animal.

Sure, there are cultural issues and such, but c'mon now... animals are too cognitively simplistic to be affected in the myriad and nuanced ways people are by advanced abstract concepts such as national identity, politics, history, etc..  Locale does not re-write a dog's cognitive abilities, behaviors, genetics, and other pre-existing predispositions.  Though cliched to death, I will paraphrase Shakespeare, "What's in a name? Does a rose by any other name smell not as sweet?"

No, the purpose of the Staffordshire name continues as it began--to distance an animal from it's true, 'unsavory' history, to confuse the breed-danger issue, to mislead, to con, and falsify numbers to skew statistics in ways the average Joe will not be aware of.  Much like spouting the nanny-dog myth, anyone authoritatively asserting/arguing about differentiating between Staffordshire's and pitbulls as wholly different breeds outs themselves--in a highly visible way and easily identifiable way...  as someone who does not know what they're really talking about, vibrantly displays their ignorance of history and biology, and consideration should be given with accordance to their massive deficit in verifiable knowledge.

What does the media have against pitbulls? Truth.

By now, most people have probably heard pitbull apologia's desperate and deplorable cry that there is a "media bias" against pitbulls.  Seeking to mitigate the stark contrast between the volume of attacks betwixt the 'chosen breed' and others, they claim that the media over-reports or reports only pitbull attacks, and that other breeds attack all the time but go under-/un-reported.

Now let it first be said what the criteria for an attack is...  finger-nips, one quick bite-and-release, and self-defense/fear biting that results in only superficial injury is NOT newsworthy.  Such a deluge of common happenstance would saturate the media so much that it would be extremely difficult know much of anything if we had to sludge our way through 'report' after report of every growl and nip.  What constitutes an attack, and what I am referring to when I use the term here is;
serious injury requiring urgent medical care, such as:
  • lacerations deep enough to require stitches or staples,
  • significant and dangerous blood loss,
  • broken bones,
  • snapped spines,
  • cracked or crushed skulls/ribs,
  • lacerated internal organs,
  • evisceration,
  • crippling, disfigurement through loss of eye/ear/nose/lips/muscle tissue/cartilage/bone/scalp or degloving (being 'skinned' through traumatic ripping force),
  • permanent nerve damage,
  • permanent loss of bodily function,
  • brain damage,
  • loss of limbs,
  • loss of life,

As of December 31, 2013, the Federal Communications Commission reports that there are 30,432 television and radio broadcast stations within the United States(1).  The National Newspaper Association presently represents 2000+ newspapers(2)--this being a dramatically reduced number due to the massive cultural shift to digital mediums within the last 15 years.  A simple Google query for news websites in the US yields over 1, 340,000 results(3).  As of 2012, the  Bureau of Labor statistics shows that the US employed approximately 57,600 reporters, news correspondents, and broadcast news analysts(4).  Education News' Career Index showed that, as of 2010, there were 105,350 journalism professionals working in the United States(6).

And yet, pitbull fanatics would have you believe--and unfortunately, have been quite successful in convincing far too many--that every station, outlet, publication, reporter, and journalist has some sort of personal vendetta against a single breed of dog... so much so that they would defy journalistic integrity to persecute an animal many of them have either never had a negative experience with or, predominately, have not encountered at all.  Pitbull apologists expect you to believe these people, for no fathomable reason at all, would risk their very careers or that these stations would risk their credibility and endanger the public at large by pointedly ignoring the (mythical) attacks committed by other breeds.  They claim the media is all about reporting on pitbulls because they are sensational--yet the sheer volume of attacks--occurring on a daily basis throughout the US...  makes pitbull attacks anything but.   They are business as usual.

The very definition of sensational is that which invokes intense interest or curiosity.   There's nothing new (and therefore novel, new, or interesting) about a pitbull inflicting serious injury or death on a person, pet, or livestock.  This high frequency leaves sensationalism to be found only in how horrific the aftermath is.  What IS sensational is a member of dog breed not known for aggressive tendencies or destructive behaviors, or physically unlikely to cause grievous harm (the ONE and only fatality by a pomeranian mix that killed a newborn) disfiguring or killing someone.

The bizarre and unusual are media's lifeblood; the ability to offer something that hasn't been heard of before, or that doesn't seem to make sense with the masses understanding of the world... such tales are attention grabbers.  They can give a media outlet a competitive edge over their contemporaries.

The unusual, no matter what it is, promises the most payoff.  It makes absolutely no fiscal sense for any medium to regularly forfeit attacks by other breeds.  It is within their BEST interest to do so as often as the opportunity arises.  This makes the 'media bias' conspiracy theory all the more absurd... so absurd and contradictory to volumes of tangible evidence that it borders on the same psychosis of Holocaust-deniers.  This ridiculous "media conspiring against pitbulls" assertion requires the belief that tens of thousands of people working in and for the media are conspiring against  a single breed ...to the very heavy detriment to themselves, their employer, their paycheck, and the public.

What IS strange--a genuine curiosity, if you will--is when a 'tried and true' breed, the most relied-upon for service work and family environments, such as the Labrador, kills someone.  The data-gathering magazine ANIMAL PEOPLE issued a report showing that, from September 1982 through December 31, 2013, purebred Labradors have killed only three people.
The death toll rises by 9 if you include Lab mixes... one of which was an Akita (the Japanese equivalent of a fighting dog) mix, another mixed with German Shepherd (known for their boldness and aggression--which is why they are the top breed in schutzhund and police work), and five of which were pitbull mixes.
In stark contrast, 263 people in that same time-frame were killed by purebred pitbulls.  If including pitbull mixes, that number rises to 277(5).

For the 2013 year alone;

In the last week: (at the time of this writing)

A 22 month old Montana toddler was mauled into critical condition by the never-bit-anyone-before family dog of 10 years(8b), which tore off her grandmother's fingers as she intervened, and would not stop attacking the helpless baby girl until a neighbor Jonathan Banta arrived to help and stabbed it repeatedly with a steak knife(8).  Another life-flight victim.  Little Deriah Solem was attacked Thursday evening and died at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center the following Monday afternoon.

Despite weeks of regular interaction and familiarity, Joel Chirieleison of Tanning Springs, FL, was mauled to death by his aunt's two pitbulls--neither of which had a history of aggression, both of which had interacted with children many times prior without a problem(7).

6yo Armani McKinnis was attacked by a loose pitbull while attending a friend's birthday party.  It took the intervention of witness Micheal Marshall and his two nephews--beating the dog with chairs and even standing on its neck--to get the dog to release(9).  The injuries to his face and leg were so severe he had to be rushed into emergency surgery and spent the night in the pediatric intensive care unit. (9) The child's grandmother described his face as "demolished" and "gone"(9b).

59yo Cindy Whisman was mauled to death in her own backyard, in front of her 2yo grandson, by her daughter's never-aggressive-before, raised-from-a-puppy pitbull.  Her daughter was living with her; the dog was a 'household member' wholly familiar with Cindy(14).  Detectives reported she had extensive injuries all over her face, neck, body, and hands.  Butler County coroner Dr.Lisa Mannix simply put the cause of death as accidental, "due to dog bite" on the autopsy report.  In the sidebar of other articles on the news-site featuring this article, were several pro-pitbull stories as well, including a piece titled "pitbulls aren't the only dangerous dogs"(14b).

Another Butler County resident, 67yo Pamela Middlebrooks, was attacked by a neighbor's pitbull while on her daily walk.  When she saw the neighbor and dog approaching, she stepped off the curb to avoid being in close proximity to them.  The owner even picked up the dog, but it immediately broke free of his hold, ran after Middlebrooks, and attacked her from behind.  Fortunately but atypically, he was able to wrest his dog off of her and returned it to his domicile.  A neighboring witness, Terry Brown, ran to help Middlebrooks and described her visage as thus; “She had blood all over the inside of her legs. Blood was running down both thighs.” The owner had the gall to tell her the dog wasn't his--after first taking it and placing it back inside his home.  Officers' subsequent investigation revealed a backyard kennel with a female pitbull.(28)

A third Butler resident--a black Labrador retriever in Hamilton, lost an ear to a pitbull serially loose in the neighborhood.  Officers and Animal Control finally caught the offending dog on the same Monday morning that Pamela Middlebrooks was attacked and Cindy Whisman was killed.(28)

In Hot Springs, AR, a pitbull mix invaded an elderly woman's yard with escalating hostility toward the 72yo and would not leave until she fired a shot in the air(10).

3 scrapyard Rottweilers killed a 57yo man working there.  He was employed there for years, and was reportedly a very kind man who "took care of those dogs like children".(13)

An Ardrie pitbull with a previous history of "incidents" as described by local Mounties broke free of its collar and leash to get at and kill a neighbor's loose, small,  "poodle-type dog". (12)

When Anastasia Pavlova's business-as-usual trek to the Marcus Garvey Dog Run with her 3yo white Maltese, Bentley, she noticed a few unfamiliar dogs in the dog park.  Before entering with Bentley, she asked the owners if their dogs got along with small breeds.  All of them said yes, so she entered.  In a flash, a large pitbull snapped up Bentley and crushed into his ribcage with jaws so powerful teeth penetrated his lungs.  Anastasia somehow managed to free her dog and get to an emergency vet, but it was too late.  The little dog bled out and died in Anastasia's arms.  The owner of the pitbull immediately took off with his dog and never came forward.  No one could identify him by name.
The article included quotes of blind speculation by the organizer of dog-run events, Millie Gonzalez, whose concern was clearly more for the public image of the pitbull than maintaining the safety of her human and canine dog-park patrons; after pointless speculation that would have the public believing this was not a dog-park matter because the owner of the pitbull "might have just been dog-walkers"--when the attack CLEARLY happened INSIDE the dog-park and was not a result of a random dog-walker's dog either attacking another dog just outside the run or somehow seizing an opportunity to break into the run--she was quick to say, "The last thing I want to do is demonize a breed that’s already been victimized,” said Gonzalez, 44. “This is an issue of what responsible pet ownership is.”(15)

81yo Jack Harper was walking his bichon frise, Fliss, in Weaverham when a loose Staffordshire terrier* seized her by the throat, ripping her windpipe, esophagus, and puncturing her skull in multiple places.  Harper beat at the attacking dog with a stick to no avail.  It took one heavy-booted bystander kicking it and another beating it with a pole to get the dog to release Fliss.(16)
*A Staffordshire terrier IS a pitbull... breed names, variants, and attributes will be a post in its own right.

San Franciscoan Mike Lindstrom's pitbull mauled 3yo German Shepherd Max.  The attack was caught on a passing motorist's dashcam.  The pitbull turned on Mike when he tried to stop the attack, even knocking him to the ground.  Max ran from the scene at first opportunity and has not been seen since.(17)

A 40yo New Braunfels woman confronted by police (while trespassing)  allowed her pitbull mix loose, which then went at them with hostility.  The officers had to defend themselves with their service weapons.  The article put quotation marks around "aggressive" when describing the dog, as if the very clear threat witnessed by multiple people was in question. (18)

A Lakewood, WA landlord was chased off his property and into a neighbor's yard by his tenants two English Bulldogs*.  Neighbor Katherine Holmes described the scene;
"I drove down a very long driveway and the whole time saw dogs on top of this man viciously attacking him.  He was on the ground and had been there for quite a while as these dogs took chunks out of him," Holmes said. "I had to use everything that was at my disposal. I used my child's car seat and full water bottles and they still didn't get off of him."
*English bulldogs are part of what created the modern pitbull streamlined for dog-fighting.  See the post 'Purpose Bred' for details.
A Lakewood Police official called the dog mauling one of the worst he's ever seen.  The victim spent a week in Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.(19)

Another Lakewood man was attacked in his own home by the 2yo family pitbull.  He was holding his infant child, and suffered over 20 puncture wounds to his arms and thigh to keep the dog from getting at the baby.  A woman in the home (her relation to the man/baby goes unreported) also suffered injuries, while they were reportedly not as severe as the man's, both required emergency medical treatment.  They went to separate hospitals as the man's wounds required higher trauma services not available in all hospitals.(20)

Later that same day, in a wholly separate incident, a little boy suffered injury to his back when a pitbull in the home attacked him.  He was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus for treatment.(20)

5yo Quentin Holman of Kansas City, MO, required facial reconstruction after a loose chow-mix entered the boy's yard and bit him in the face.  The article did not specify what other breeds constituted the dog's 'mix', but there were some startling aspects of the attack that parallel a methodology very specific to fighting breeds.
The dog moved with deceptive body language before its explosive aggression; witness Billy Vaden described it thusly;
"I didn't think he'd bite nobody. He didn't look vicious. He really didn't. He looked like he was calm and cool, just walking down the street content, like he was glad to get loose from somewhere," Vaden said. "He was just enjoying it, enjoying his little moment of freedom."
The attack was wholly unprovoked; little Quentin was playing in his own yard at a family gathering.
The presence of adults did not deter the dog
and it exercised extraordinary tenacity--they had to "shoo it away" from the property repeatedly throughout the day.
The dog went straight for the little boy's face
and inflicted catastrophic damage
with long-term effects.  The nerve damage to his mouth and lips was significant enough to impair sensation and the ability to talk.(21)
Despite knowing nothing definitive of the dog's history and circumstances, the article included speculation about what 'made' the dog attack;
"I am very happy. My daughter is happy. But it's a happy-sad because we like animals," she said. "Because of his previous owner's neglect or abandonment, he had to fend for himself. And that's not a good thing, either."
However, no witnesses nor Animal Control reported the dog as appearing abused or malnourished.  In cases of dog attacks in which the dog is determined to have been abused or neglected, it is among the first thing the involved animal professionals mention to the media... and many animal professionals wind up involved in processing dogs when they attack. (That will be a future post in its own right.)  It is also notable that the dog in this scenario, despite having the opportunity to go after the 'easier target' right next to Quentin--the family Yorkie--the dog went after the boy's face and did not attempt to consume the boy's flesh.

A 50yo Eugene woman allegedly trespassing on a man's property suffered serious injury to her arm when his pitbull-boxer mix latched on to her and would not let her go until the owner intervened.  To his credit; dangerous dog signs were posted on the property and the badly injured woman was cited for second-degree criminal trespassing.(23)

Two of Marty Stevenson's four pitbulls escaped and attacked a neighbor.  His other pitbulls were already impounded for aggressive behaviors--which were caught on tape by his neighbors--and had not been released back to him because he failed to meet the city's requirements for proper enclosed cages, tattoo or microchip identification, and proof of rabies vaccination.  Despite the bite injury and witness and video evidence, the article put quotations around every mention of the dog's aggression, as if it were in question, and also included the assertion (made by one of the owner's friends) that “I haven’t seen any dog bites or anything like that."(23)

A 27yo Bluffton man was on break at work when a coworker's pitbull spontaneously emerged from under a vehicle and savaged his lower right leg.  He spent nearly five hours in the ER getting it treated and closed up.(24)

Californian horseback-rider Natalie Lilley and her 12yo daughter were out riding in the morning when two loose pitbulls went after them and sparked a chase.  Lilley screamed at her young daughter to ride in the opposite direction. Lilley thought they could outride the dogs but the dogs overtook the horses and started snapping at stirrups and one of the horse's belly.  She jumped off, hoping that alleviating the horse of her weight would enable it to escape.  It still suffered deep lacerations and "chunks taken from its legs".  The dogs' owner refused to give Lilley any form of identification and took off with the dogs before police arrived.  They remain at large. (25)

Two Riverside County boys, ages 11 and 5, suffered bites in the head, stomach, and hand from a neighbor's pitbull that broke free of its restraint to attack them.  The dog had previously been put on dangerous dog 'probation' for biting the owner's son in the head less than four months earlier.(26)

The force required to interrupt a family's internal pitbull vs pitbull fight was best dealt via a heavy cast iron pan.  Unfortunately, when 15yo Brian Brown tried to do exactly that--hurling the pan to stop the fight--he missed and it fatally struck his twin brother Ryan in the head.(27)

17yo Davon Jiggetts of Riverdale, GA, was struck and killed by a car fleeing an attacking pitbull (which was also struck and killed by the same vehicle) that went after him right after he stepped off the bus home.(29)

Another Georgia teenager, 13yo Demonta Collins, was killed the same way in Augusta, only two days before Davon Jiggett's death.(29)

46yo Celiflora Maldonado was unloading groceries from her car when she was attacked by one of her neighbor's two pitbulls.  That neighbor's dog-sitter was trying to get the dogs inside their fence when they attacked her, right before going next door and commencing with Maldonado's attack.  Neighbor Johnny Campos described the sounds he heard; "Blood-curdling screams, horrible, something you never hear."  10yo Justin Melesio heard, came outside, and tried to help his aunt, frantically hurling things at the dog and screaming for help when his efforts proved futile.  Maldonado's own children also came outside and tried to help.  It took the efforts of more people--neighbors--to finally free her.  Her arms and breast were so savaged she had to be hospitalized near Greenspoint.(30)

51yo Joan Carter of Lamaha Springs was killed by her sister's two pitbulls.  She had been living with the family for over three months.  These dogs were 'family' dogs of five years, with no previous history of aggression. 'By the looks of it', according to sister Sue, Carter had desperately fought and tried to get back into the house during the attack--she was found on her knees slumped over on the steps leading to her small flat.  Blood pools and spatter remained smeared on the door and steps.(31)

The article goes on to blindly and falsely claim that pitbulls are primarily used as security and protection dogs and in "some" cases, dog-fighting for profit.  The truth is quite the opposite.  The top breeds historically purpose-bred and used for protection(31b) are;
bullmastiff
doberman pinscher
rottweiler
komodor
puli
giant schnauzer
german shepherd
rhodesian ridgeback
Other breeds of note for guarding purposes (including guarding livestock/flocks/herds) are the: boxer, Australian Cattle Dog, Manchester Terrier, Beauceron, Kuvasz, Norwegian Elkhound, Alaskan Klee Kai, Argentine Dogo, Basenji, Alano Espanol, Bernese Mountain Dog, Ariege Pointer, Boerboel, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Doberman Pinscher, Border Collie, and the Appenzeller Sennehund.(31c)
Professional dog-fighters often have large numbers of pitbulls--50 or more.  The number of people estimated to be involved in dog-fighting in the US alone numbers in the tens of thousands.(31d)  According to an HSUS 2007 report, annually, approximately a quarter-million pitbulls were placed in fighting pits nationwide, approximately 40,000 people were involved in organized dog-fighting, and another 100,000 people were involved in 'street-level' dog-fighting.(31e)  Pitbulls are indisputably the most popular breed-of-choice (having been purpose-bred specifically for dog-fighting, after all) for dogmen, and the above figures are staggering.  A far cry from... hardly... "sometimes".

A 1yo Racine, WI girl was mauled by her grandparent's pitbull.  Another life-flight victim. (32)

One of four resident pitbulls lunged at a Middleton, Ohio police officer during the service of a  drug search warrant/child-welfare check, forcing the officer to shoot the dog's muzzle in self-defense.  The shot was non-fatal, and once the area was secured, officers immediately transported it to an emergency veterinary clinic.(33)

Ellen Mohan's dog Zoey was attacked by two neighborhood pitbulls.  In her own words, "It happened in just the blink of an eye...  I can’t even put it into words," she said. "I mean, it is your absolute worst nightmare. They tore my dog up in front of me.  There was blood everywhere. Her intestines were coming out, I mean it was horrifying."  She tried to save her little dog, but even with her boyfriend's assistance, the dogs managed to both mangle her hand and kill her little dog.  Mohan suffered over 50 lacerations to her hands and had to remain hospitalized for a week. Other neighbors came forward to report being attaacked as well.  Despite this, Northfield TWP released the attacking dogs to their owner for quarantine... residents no longer feel safe walking around their own neighborhood as a result.(34)

Two pitbulls went on the rage in Buchanan, killing one woman's cat in her own yard, a small dog in another yard, and one charged a police officer tailing their frenzy.  He fired two fatal shots when the pitbull was within five feet of his person.  The other, 30 feet away, was secured.(35)

Hero Pitbull

Like many of my posts, this one is borne of commentary.  Namely, the recent story about a pitbull that took two bullets.  The story purports that Omar Persisco resisted two armed would-be truck thieves and was attacked.  The dog lunged into the fray when blood was drawn. (Omar's forehead was grazed.)
“[Max] saw the blood and was furious,” Omar said. “He left like a rocket to attack the thieves. One of them ran away but Max dominated the other one. To defend himself, the thief ended up shooting my dog."
The dog took two shots in the chest and one in the leg.  He made a full recovery in only a few weeks.  Accompanying the article was an image of Persisco and Max (when Max was fresh from the fray and still in a cast).

In the comment section, fellow safety advocates shared their thoughts, such as;

(after comments that mused about the breed of the dog, speculating about being a boxer mix)
They are always Pit Bulls until they get into trouble, then they are "some other" breed, that's how that works. They have websites you can go to and pictures of mixed breed dogs and you can pick one and use that breed.

The hypocrisy is ridiculous. If this dog had attacked a child they would be calling it anything but a pit bull. FWIW I see boxer too.

I'm sure every once in a while the mauling instinct comes in handy and finds a suitable target.

'Hero Pit Bulls' don't cut it for me, or anyone sane. No other breeds need this kind of 'heroism' broadcast and shoved down our throats constantly (oh, I wonder why...). Dogs of all kinds attack intruders, would-be rapists, bark at fires etc-bloody-etc. THEY don't need these 'hero dog' labels that the damn Maulers do. NOTHING they do can cancel out or make softer and better, the mutilating injuries or the miserable and painful death of one child. 'Heroism' does not resurrect the dead nor restore formerly innocent smooth faces back to their former beauty.

people who want a protection dog should choose another breed not known for random violence

The dog just did what he wanted: attacked someone. That someone could be anyone. No heroism in it.

With the exception of breed speculation, I agree with the above.  I wrote;

Everyone's already said what I think about these hero stories and the underlying motivation of the dog (attack happy, not defense happy)... however, I do see clear pit in that image. It's uncommon coloring, and the angle of its head obscures the trademark cleft head, but the shape and proportions are congruent with pitbull. (note; trademark 'pitbull smile') I don't think every pitbull hero story is a wash.... that's just too black and white for me; that's how nutters think. (i.e. pitbulls are *never* at fault).

The point I would remind fencers and the public is... is that is part of what makes pitbulls so dangerous... their ability to, for a time, play the part of a 'normal' dog. Their temporary docility and mimicry of affectionate dog behavior misleads a person, lulls them into a false sense of security, makes them think it is indeed an appropriate companion animal.

These behaviors are misconstrued as genuine affection akin to that in other breeds, when in reality they are more rooted in the bloodsport kill-set they were bred for... namely that the element of surprise is a plus in battle, and therefore it is in a fighting dog's best interest to NOT broadcast intent; they do not growl. They do not snarl. They do not tense. They do not assume an aggressive stance. They just... GO, suddenly, instantly, *without warning*.

Aside from genetically endowed tactical deceit, this misleading affectionate or calm behavior bonds the animal to its owner (via the owners emotions and perceptions, not through a dogs deliberate motivation--one sided love, if you will), which makes it all the harder to fathom anything other than their limited personal experience with the breed, and makes it harder for them to face the cognitive dissonance and opposing world view that pitbull reality presents.

Think about it; by the time abusers become obviously abusive, they've played enough 'prince charming' to manipulate their victim's heart... it's very difficult for a victim of domestic violence to absorb that the love they feel is so real was a sham, a ploy, a manipulation... we are always reluctant to give up things that we were so certain was good and right. Humans intrinsically shy away from being wrong. That's why denial has such a broad scope across differing issues.

What I want people to understand/remember is that the very same 'good' dog is no safer than the family pets that have suddenly turned and killed their loving owners, children, friends, visitors, fellow companion animals/members of the same 'pack' as people view it...

This breed is incapable of genuine fealty, as is evidenced by the multitude of aforementioned victims. Hell, the blog Craven Desires (and other good blogs listed on its blogroll) has a tag for people that are spontaneously attacked by their own pet/family dogs, titled 'Darwin Awards'.
It is NOT a short list. I think the average person not-yet-familiar-with-the-issue would be stunned by how long it is, and how frequently it happens within this particular breed.

What it all boils down to is; yes, these hero stories can/do happen. But that has no bearing on all the idiopathic attacks that have/do happen[ed]. One doesn't cancel out the other. And when it comes to differentials among breeds; true, genuine hero stories, such as this one--where the dog runs headlong into danger in defense of or to save its owner, well these are extremely rare in bully breeds.

By comparison, you are much much more likely to be protected/saved by established companion breeds such as retrievers. Serious/fatal attacks can/have happened by other breeds but it is in such stark contrast that, statistically, these other breed attacks are likened to flukes, while serious and fatal attacks by pitbulls are common enough to establish congruency of dangerous behavior in the breed.
