Hero Pitbull

Like many of my posts, this one is borne of commentary.  Namely, the recent story about a pitbull that took two bullets.  The story purports that Omar Persisco resisted two armed would-be truck thieves and was attacked.  The dog lunged into the fray when blood was drawn. (Omar's forehead was grazed.)
“[Max] saw the blood and was furious,” Omar said. “He left like a rocket to attack the thieves. One of them ran away but Max dominated the other one. To defend himself, the thief ended up shooting my dog."
The dog took two shots in the chest and one in the leg.  He made a full recovery in only a few weeks.  Accompanying the article was an image of Persisco and Max (when Max was fresh from the fray and still in a cast).

In the comment section, fellow safety advocates shared their thoughts, such as;
note: these are comments from different people; a person per paragraph, authors spaced between

(after comments that mused about the breed of the dog, speculating about being a boxer mix)
They are always Pit Bulls until they get into trouble, then they are "some other" breed, that's how that works. They have websites you can go to and pictures of mixed breed dogs and you can pick one and use that breed.

The hypocrisy is ridiculous. If this dog had attacked a child they would be calling it anything but a pit bull. FWIW I see boxer too.

I'm sure every once in a while the mauling instinct comes in handy and finds a suitable target.

'Hero Pit Bulls' don't cut it for me, or anyone sane. No other breeds need this kind of 'heroism' broadcast and shoved down our throats constantly (oh, I wonder why...). Dogs of all kinds attack intruders, would-be rapists, bark at fires etc-bloody-etc. THEY don't need these 'hero dog' labels that the damn Maulers do. NOTHING they do can cancel out or make softer and better, the mutilating injuries or the miserable and painful death of one child. 'Heroism' does not resurrect the dead nor restore formerly innocent smooth faces back to their former beauty.

people who want a protection dog should choose another breed not known for random violence

The dog just did what he wanted: attacked someone. That someone could be anyone. No heroism in it.

With the exception of breed speculation, I agree with the above.  I wrote;

Everyone's already said what I think about these hero stories and the underlying motivation of the dog (attack happy, not defense happy)... however, I do see clear pit in that image. It's uncommon coloring, and the angle of its head obscures the trademark cleft head, but the shape and proportions are congruent with pitbull. (note; trademark 'pitbull smile') I don't think every pitbull hero story is a wash.... that's just too black and white for me; that's how nutters think. (i.e. pitbulls are *never* at fault).

The point I would remind fencers and the public is... is that is part of what makes pitbulls so dangerous... their ability to, for a time, play the part of a 'normal' dog. Their temporary docility and mimicry of affectionate dog behavior misleads a person, lulls them into a false sense of security, makes them think it is indeed an appropriate companion animal.

These behaviors are misconstrued as genuine affection akin to that in other breeds, when in reality they are more rooted in the bloodsport kill-set they were bred for... namely that the element of surprise is a plus in battle, and therefore it is in a fighting dog's best interest to NOT broadcast intent; they do not growl. They do not snarl. They do not tense. They do not assume an aggressive stance. They just... GO, suddenly, instantly, *without warning*.

Aside from genetically endowed tactical deceit, this misleading affectionate or calm behavior bonds the animal to its owner (via the owners emotions and perceptions, not through a dogs deliberate motivation--one sided love, if you will), which makes it all the harder to fathom anything other than their limited personal experience with the breed, and makes it harder for them to face the cognitive dissonance and opposing world view that pitbull reality presents.

Think about it; by the time abusers become obviously abusive, they've played enough 'prince charming' to manipulate their victim's heart... it's very difficult for a victim of domestic violence to absorb that the love they feel is so real was a sham, a ploy, a manipulation... we are always reluctant to give up things that we were so certain was good and right. Humans intrinsically shy away from being wrong. That's why denial has such a broad scope across differing issues.

What I want people to understand/remember is that the very same 'good' dog is no safer than the family pets that have suddenly turned and killed their loving owners, children, friends, visitors, fellow companion animals/members of the same 'pack' as people view it...

This breed is incapable of genuine fealty, as is evidenced by the multitude of aforementioned victims. Hell, the blog Craven Desires (and other good blogs listed on its blogroll) has a tag for people that are spontaneously attacked by their own pet/family dogs, titled 'Darwin Awards'.
It is NOT a short list. I think the average person not-yet-familiar-with-the-issue would be stunned by how long it is, and how frequently it happens within this particular breed.

What it all boils down to is; yes, these hero stories can/do happen. But that has no bearing on all the idiopathic attacks that have/do happen[ed]. One doesn't cancel out the other. And when it comes to differentials among breeds; true, genuine hero stories, such as this one--where the dog runs headlong into danger in defense of or to save its owner, well these are extremely rare in bully breeds.

By comparison, you are much much more likely to be protected/saved by established companion breeds such as retrievers. Serious/fatal attacks can/have happened by other breeds but it is in such stark contrast that, statistically, these other breed attacks are likened to flukes, while serious and fatal attacks by pitbulls are common enough to establish congruency of dangerous behavior in the breed.

Purpose Bred

This began as a riposte to a grossly misinformed commentator's blather about the origins of pitbulls, however, by the time I went to enter my comment, I was notified the article is no longer receiving comments.  I included a fair number of resources, links, and information in my comment... I couldn't scrap it.  It's a message I wish for all to hear, so I decided to copy and paste it, and expound on it as an entry/lesson in its own right.

Barbara Kay is an award-winning columnist, author, and radio/tv pundit who frequently parries sadistic pitbull mania as a result of reporting on pitbull news with all the hard facts many news outlets have been intimidated into glossing over.

As a result of her commitment to the truth (which so many find uncomfortable because it unseats their presumed and self-titled authority over a favored animal) and the subsequent debunking of popular lies, she is the recipient of a never-ending stream of obscene and fanatical hate.  Still, she perseveres, and as her knowledge of and experience in the cause deepens, so, too, does it seem--her resolve to combat the frothing insanity with reason, logic, facts, and wit.

The Comments sparking my writing:

Pits are not bred to be fighting dogs no more than chihuahuas are bred to be in a Taco Bell commercial.
[after a voice of reason informs her they were bred for dog-fighting]
The original Pit Bull was used primarily for boar hunting as well as companion and guarding purposes and appears in paintings dating back as far as the 1500s. They then, due to HUMAN greed, went to bull baiting. So Gabriel, find another source.

Do a search for books on pit bull boar hunting, count how many you find. Then do a search on pit bull dog fighting, count how many you find.
You'll find volumes of books and articles on pit bull dog fighting. Don't forget to check Amazon. Free shipping of you have a premiere membership.

There are my sources. Pit bulls are primarily used for dog fighting, not boar hunting. I don't think you'll even find a book on pit bull boar hunting. LOL!
[the only mention of pit bulls in boar hunting are online comments from dog-sport enthusiasts--using the animals in hunting feral pigs within ONLY the last 10-15 years.  Additionally, these hunts are extremely impractical and dangerous --especially to the dog, since these dogs are not used to merely 'alert' of a pig's location, but go 'all in' and fight these surprisingly fearsome swine-- and therefore a matter of recreation and sadism, not a kind of 'service' of culling non-indigenous pig populations (a big problem in the south, including my home state of Texas)... though enthusiasts may and do use that philanthropic cover for their activities.  Battling, injury, and even death from feral pig or pitbull attack is often a very slow and painful process--certainly not a humane 'method' of anything.  Several animal services agencies have even issued bulletins to pitbull enthusiasts and shelters that the dogs are being procured for hog hunting as a spectacle--watching one animal kill another.  This makes sense, given the history of dog-fighting evolving as various types of bloodsport; more on that later.]

Hate to bust your bubble so soon. They were BRED for boar hunting. Your original comment "they were bred to fight". And while there may be a buttload of books on dog fighting, that is still a HUMAN sport using dogs as weapons. I know this because I've been up close and personal with the dogs, the fighting, and the damage for more than 30 years. And truly, I didn't mean for you to go to the library although its encouraging that you have a card. You can Google on the computer. It too is a fascinating weapon

By Stephanie's own standards, she fails, and also demonstrates her hypocrisy and failure to operate according to her own demands.  Instead of posturing and bluffing, I decided to hit back with actual traceable resources... the product of, yes, Google, which yielded tomes of information derived from academic, third-party (objective), scientific, and historical sources.  These sources are cited and easily accessible in the various links provided.  A person can easily backtrack to the original texts for reference.

My textual parry would have been:

Second question down answers and details the history of dog-fighting and the origins of the pitbull breed.

Note: There's a lot of hostility aimed at dogsbite.org by pitbull fanatics, who spew libel of 'lies' and 'bias' about the site.  While it is true that the founder is a pitbull attack victim herself, that does not necessarily negate the content of her organization.  If anything, in its own way, that fact validates her credibility.

How? One of the most common things people suffering an affliction of any kind (an illness, cancer, loss of a loved one, permanent and life-changing injury) is to educate themselves about it as much as possible.  Directly (self), or indirectly (loved ones);
  • Domestic violence shelters tend to be run/staffed by those who have personal experience with it,
  • people tend to specialize in the medical field according to their experiences with it,
  • people tend to participate in causes and campaigns according to their experiences with it,
  • donors and benefactors contribute to a cause according to their experiences with it,
  • so on and so forth....
  To dismiss the legitimacy, research, and value of a given cause just because those operating within it are intimately familiar with it (and therefore best suited to educate and speak from experience with real authority) would be to dismiss the phenomenal work of groups such as Susan B. Komen's Race for the Cure and MADD (mothers against drunk driving).
Additionally, in dogsbite.org and other organizations/blogs I list herein, hundreds and hundreds of references are used from all sorts of external, unbiased, unaffiliated sources...
...from physicians, scientists, universities, studies, news groups, authors, animal control agencies, shelter workers, independent and/or firsthand film/pictures/testimony, historical archives, law enforcement, and animal specialists from around the country--even from around the globe.  Many references predate the founder's very existence on this earth, and yet, according to blind or willingly deceptive fanatics, all are somehow supposedly 'in bed' with a person/organization many even recent sources  don't even know exists.
More compelling, the educational and charity groups involved operate with complete transparency--the same cannot be said of the self-proclaimed 'experts' pitbull advocacy hangs its hat on. The specifics for dogsbite.org--> http://www.dogsbite.org/dogsbite-about.php
Another great site:
 http://www.daxtonsfriends.com/american-pit-bull-terrier/
about page-->  http://www.daxtonsfriends.com/about-us/

In summary;
pitbulls did not exist until the emergence of dog-fighting, because they were PURPOSE bred for dog-fighting. Pitbulls were the deliberate mixture of the bull-baiting bloodsport champion breed--Olde English Bulldogges (for strength--especially superior jaw strength--and aggression) ...and terrier breeds (speed, agility, prey-drive, and tenacity).

It is of note that bulldogs (a closely related, ancestral, but still distinct and separate breed from pitbull terriers) were used in bull-baiting--that is part and parcel of the breed name.
In 'layman's terms';  Bulldog may = great great great great great great great great (insert as many greats as needed) grand-pappy of pitbull, but bulldog =/=pitbull.  Bulldogs predate pitbulls and can be tracked to the 1500s, but the pitbull terrier breed canNOT--because it did not exist then.

There exists no certifiably dated painting of pitbulls that conform to the breed standard that dates back farther than the last 150 years.  There do exist bulldog paintings in accordance with Stephanie's time-frame, but their breed is unmistakable to anyone:
1. capable of reading and viewing a breed standard and
2. with working eyesNeed not be 20/20, even, but enough to dependably ascertain color, texture, size, and shape.

The pitbull terrier as a breed emerged in the mid 1800s, with origins in England and Ireland, and heavily exporting to the US after dog-fighting was banned in the aforementioned countries.

Before dog-fighting was outlawed in the US, it was explosively popular, and many books, magazines, and even news items were written about the sport and game dogs... in fact, the UKC was originally created as both a legitimate way to 'recognize the breed' (the breed was that new, and the AKC would NOT do it precisely because of the breed's FIGHTING ORIGINS) and as a register for fighting dogs.

Returning to the boar-hunting claim for a moment; how credible is the assertion that it is more cover for sadistic bloodsport than utility?
It lies within the historical adaptability and ingenuity of those who love watching animals die.  Bulldogs were used for bull-baiting.  When that was outlawed, for a time, cock-fighting became 'all the rage'.  When that was outlawed, grotesque and impractical dog ratting competitions became hot stuff.  When that was outlawed, bloodthirsty men set the dogs upon each other. It stands to reason--since dog fighting is now illegal, but hunting boar with dogs is not, that they could/would/have avoid(ed) legal recrimination by moving the desired battle-to-the-death  onto foes that skirt law-breaking.

Though something should be said for the diversification of animal bloodsport--fanatics try to invalidate BSL (breed specific legislation) by claiming that, were the breed banned, the 'bad men' would just move on to fighting other dogs.  There is so much folly in that I can't even think of a witty analogy about it.

The reasons that justification is a problem;

1.)the heritability of physical conformity and behavior. 'Form follows function.'  Dog behaviorist and author Alexandra Semyonova explains in scientific detail how, when dogs are bred for a certain behavior, their physical body evolves and changes shape to optimally fit the task--in a nutshell--the basics of evolution.
Huskies look the way they do because they were bred for heat economy.
Greyhounds have their telltale physique and deep chest for optimal oxygenation while sprinting.
The border collie's skeleton (on which physique rests and therefore affects shape) is optimized for stalking behaviors that would cause acute arthritis in other breeds.
Certain characteristics are ideal for bloodsport, and selective breeding only accelerates and exaggerates the process.  Take the Russian fox experiment, for example.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticated_silver_fox  A team of researchers started breeding Russian silver foxes for desirable companion behaviors--diminished aggression, affection for humans, etc..  In the span of less than 52 years, this breeding program dramatically altered not just the natural behaviors but the very appearance and shape of the foxes.  They went from this:
to this (and the above right):

This is firsthand evidence that specific task breeding develops a certain physique.  Breeding dogs for fighting will inevitably elicit changes that generate the pitbull breed all over again.  It wouldn't take a rocket scientist or collective army to modify legislation as new problem breeds develop.  It WILL be possible to identify the products of continuing dog-fighting.  Creating an open-ended ban of fighting breeds is the most responsible and sensible course of action to take.
We added amendments to our constitution (civil rights) because it was the right thing to do, and the fact that doing so could not eradicate problems and injustices a 100% was not grounds for maintaining the negative, violent, and abusive status quo.

2.)that is suggesting we enable criminal behavior by doing nothing to counter and resolve the problem.  when banning fighting breeds, possession of a fighting breed becomes a tip-off for illegal activities--in that sense, banning serves as a positive for the breed.  Eliminating supply makes it harder to fulfill demand, and making the components of criminal activity illegitimate makes it harder to hide.  Right now, it's extremely easy for dog-fighting rings to hide 'in plain sight'.  These people probably have the strongest vested interest in fueling and perpetuating fighting breed propaganda--especially considering individual fight purses can run as high as 100K.

3.)just because criminals are capable of adapting their chosen crime by finding new ways/tools to fulfill their sadistic needs, does not mean a 'war' against what they're doing is futile, pointless, and without value.  Drunk driving is illegal, but it continues to happen on a wide scale--because it cannot be eliminated wholly, should we throw in the towel and repeal punitive drunk driving laws?
Throughout history, drug purveyors developed (and continue to do so--think crack as the poor mans cocaine, bath salts to replace PCP, krokodil as a cheaper meth alternative, and synthetic marijuana to substitute the obvious) alternatives to various drugs.  How on earth does a new problem make an old problem a free-for-all?  It's not just reckless, dangerous, childish, and senseless; its lazy and a nihilist non-solution.
"Why bother because bad stuff still happens"?  That is what waxing on about other dogs being victimized is... an attempt to excuse doing anything to stop the current victimization (which sucks in countless innocents and destroys lives in its wake).  That sort of attitude would cease the study of and development of new medicines  for viruses and bacteria because they continue to evolve and develop resistance against current medications.  These pathogens will continue to evolve into something else but that will never change the fact that the old ones will continue to exist and afflict ...and will continue do so indefinitely unless we continue being proactive about eradicating them.

Here is part of an interesting expose on the foundations of the pitbull breed:
http://blog.dogsbite.org/2010/05/1909-fatality-john-p-colbys-fighting.html
(it specifically addresses the falsehood that 'man-biters were culled' and is testimony to the breed's fighting origins)
Please note, at the bottom of the entry is a full list of external sources full of great information from HISTORICAL (not personal musing) sources.
Adding to the massive oversight in pitbull breeding practices (aka the aforementioned 'man biters were culled' lie) is an additional, highly disturbing fact worth mentioning (as noted by a commenter on the Craven Desires blog entry on Colby);

    The Colbys also had a 2-year old child that died. She might have died from many different causes, including having her neck torn open by a Colby dog.
 [The commenter provided the link below, but Florence's name does not appear on the genealogy anymore.  The link was provided in May 2010, over four years ago at the time of this writing, and Craven Desires has drawn a lot of negative attention from pitbull fanatics.  It's highly likely the Colby family may have decided to obfuscate the record.  However, the child's existence cannot be entirely denied, via the headstone below the link.
I think it is also very telling--the fact that this child's life and death were conspicuously struck from records post dog-fighting expose...  Speculation alone is not nearly as telling as when that speculation moves someone to action/hiding--what is there to hide?  Why hide something... unless it affirms something you don't want known?  ...and the Colby line is quite a source of wealth for some in these contemporary times...]

Pitbulls were not 'chosen', they were CREATED for the sole purpose of blood-sport.  That is what purpose-bred means.  They were never guard dogs, or farm dogs, or herding dogs, and certainly not nanny dogs (that deadly obscenity still circulates today, even though pitbull advocacy juggernaut BADRAP itself flaccidly acknowledges the lie).  I think everyone should read http://thenannydogblog.blogspot.com/ just as everyone should learn about the dangers of fire, wild animals, driving safety, etc..

Refusing to address the issue, and allowing animal fanatic sociopaths to continue disseminating dangerously false--fatally false!--propaganda that places, essentially, canine timebombs-under-cuddly-companion-guise is what continues to create tragedies like these:

WARNING: GRAPHIC/TRIGGERING IMAGES
SOME OF EXTREME BODILY INJURY/DEATH
These images are for the express purpose of educating the public about dangerous dog breeds and what they are capable of and frequently do to their human victims.  These images and the use thereof is protected under the Fair Use Act.

These are the potential side effects of pitbull ownership/affiliation/encounters.  If only it were as easy to warn people about these animals as it is to view the side effects on a label of medication or pack of cigarettes....  People are actively working to subvert the truth, with the flimsiest of excuses and the boldest of lies.  Hey, not every drunk driver crashes every time they drive, not every smoker gets lung cancer... so those are safe right?

Included below are some thought provoking visuals.  One of which is physically graphic.

note; I am not the mind behind the following two creative and compelling images, but a fan of their message.  If you've read Kay's original piece (link at the top), you can surely understand why people may be reluctant to attach their names... safety advocates and truth-tellers are harassed, fired, alienated, lied about, have their identities stolen, lives threatened (especially media reporters--even when reporting only the facts), have their homes and loved one's grave-sites vandalized--I'm NOT kidding! (the most egregious being the vandalizing and breaking of a small child's grave) among other things...

examples evidencing the severity and frequency of such obscene bullying and harassment can be found at http://fatherofdaxton.tumblr.com, under a post labeled 'hate mail'--while it was actively updated, new volleys of grotesque harassment appeared on a daily basis (according to the timestamps of the communications sent, not according to update dates--so many were coming in he updated around a weekly basis.)

Several blogs on the issue have similar (hate mail) sections where the public can see for itself just how horribly threatening and abusive fanatics are to decent and grieving people.

For this reason, I do not presume to attach names on these unless specifically desired by their respective creators.  If you are the proud producer of either of these, you need only to say the word and will put credit where credit is due.

Commentary on the employ of PC in worsening an epidemic

Sometimes you can read the comments about a complex issue and some of them are so simultaneously succinct and profound that the comment itself is worth quoting.  I often find such gems, and I hope no one minds if I do some copy paste here.  The comment is in response to the newest Craven post about the GM outrage compared to the dangerous dog un-rage; http://cravendesires.blogspot.com/2014/04/cultures-of-cover-up.html

both are horribly tragic and preventable problems.  One results in over 30 deaths per year (albeit, the numbers for this year are shaping up to be--most likely, around 1 fatality a week) and the other, in a little more than 1 death per year (13 deaths in over a decade).  One is being discussed, the other is being silenced.  Our culture is sending us a message;
the loss of human life is so extraordinarily tragic and awful that it must be accounted for and prevented by any and every means imaginable, and any and every entity involved MUST PAY...
...unless, unless dogs are involved.  Ours is truly a culture of dog worship.  Even when the human lives being lost are those of the elderly, children, BABIES (and those are the most frequent victims of so-called 'family dogs'), dog reputation comes first.  Any means are deployed to that end--including incorporating irrelevant concepts and issues such as racism and discrimination.  In doing so, they play off the now-neurotic and compulsive demand to always operate with PC language and behavior, even if unto crippling society's ability to appropriately react to/handle a worsening epidemic.  One comment put it thus;

"Dayna H******n said...

    This is where our culture of Political Correctness has gotten us. It's not ok to discriminate against a effing BREED of DOG anymore. A DOG!!! Lord help us because we are literally going to the dogs, the pit bull dogs."

And the comment that started this post, that really touched on the heart of the matter, IMHO, was in response to that;

 "Anonymous Mom in E****e said...

    Anon says:
    "If they are so sentient and aware that it is possible to discriminate against them, then we can try them as dangerous felons and they can go to doggy jail."

    EXACTLY
    Nutters want to have it both ways- either pits KNOW they are hated, or they do not. Nutters rather toss their OWN human supporters in jail rather than restricting the dog that killed.

    Dayna:
    Couldn't agree more, it is an eternal frustration for a liberal like me, that this is so out of hand.

    IMO- In its original, basic form, PC was actually helpful. No longer using ugly racist/gender slurs in daily language, and considering how the words you use impact others, *was* a real improvement.
    Now PC has been perverted, and turned into a tool of censorship.

    I am also frustrated that pit bullies have co-opted the language of racial equality and empowerment. It is disgusting to me to see pit bullies stealing the ideas, work, and sacrifice of generations of civil rights workers, just to pervert it in the service of fighting dogs.
    IMO, anyone that compares the plight of dogs to the plight of any peoples, is a POS of the lowest level. This is morally repugnant, and completely disgraceful and inappropriate."

THIS, Anonymous Mom in E****e, this.

Exploiting Victims, Pitbull Style

I will be updating in the future about the story of Kevin, the little four year old boy brutally mauled by a vicious pitbull named Mickey, the insanity that followed, the lies perpetuated to further the canine world's bloodiest propaganda, and the outrageous culmination of what can only be described as an absolute abortion (and I hate using that word in an abstract sense, but it's the only one that 'fits') of justice.

However, it is so deep, so complex, and there is so much material to present, that that will be a while yet in coming.  dogsbite.org, Craven Desires, and affiliates in their extensive blogrolls have done a wonderful job thus far of covering the issue.  I am making this post before I go heavier because this one is more urgent.  It's imperative to warn people of scams immediately.

The Facebook group FOR THE LOVE OF KEVIN* is NOT a genuine victim support page.  I repeat; the Facebook group FOR THE LOVE OF KEVIN is a RUSE, designed to draw in people curious about the issue and perpetuate forth more pitbull apologia, silencing those that would call them out on it.  This would certainly not be the first time pit zealots have created identical victim pages for the purposes of disseminating misinformation to the general public (that's a whole other post in the making, believe-you-me), and disturbingly, it won't be the last.
 * https://www.facebook.com/welovekevinvincente

Quite telling is the fact that comments by victim advocates and those sensitive to the issue were aggressively stripped.  Despite claims that the page is not about pitbull advocacy, in a thread where victim advocates had only a handful of sensitive and to the point comments asking for a little discretion, the only comments that were allowed to remain where those of another commenter issuing forth post after post of pitbull propaganda--posts which had nothing to do with Kevin or anything else but breed advocacy.  The multitude of these off-topic posts remain untouched. The group's function is not following its stated form.

I will summarize with my personal FB post issued to warn people about the Facebook group FOR THE LOVE OF KEVIN *
*yes, I am purposely repeating the name of the group to boost it's relevance in search engines--I want to warn as many people as possible that the Facebook group FOR THE LOVE OF KEVIN is a ruse, a scam, and a gross exploitation of a family already too abused and misrepresented (when represented at all)

What's really going on at the For the Love of Kevin facebook group??
WARNING!!

I've been one of the biggest supporters of the Facebook For the Love of Kevin group. I have shared links to it all over the place, outside of Facebook, even. I have directed people there so they can learn the truth about what really happened, and so they can proffer assistance to a family who *really* needs and deserves it.

However, when a thinly veiled attempt at pitbull apologia started spamming a victim's page with pitbull propaganda... and I called her out on it, albeit POLITELY, my focus being on staying on topic and supporting Kevin and his family...
I was kicked from the group.

I would seriously reconsider what you share there, guys, and I'm starting to wonder just who the mod is there and what they're really up to. This is unbelievable. I'm beyond disgusted, and flabbergasted. I mean, have I missed something? Is it now the sane thing to do to post pictures of pitbulls and kids all over the page of a CHILD pitbull VICTIM? Is that classy now?

As an aside... can anyone here speak Spanish and get into contact with Kevin's mother? The only thing we have from her is translated bits from TV interviews. I'm wondering if the family is actually getting anything from these so-called support groups soliciting donations. I wouldn't donate a red cent more till we get to the bottom of this.

EDIT; it does not appear to be a direct kick, but that the mod was so obsessive and incensed about the thread they were deleting comments by me and others immediately upon submission, which gave the illusion of being blocked. The image was removed* but supplanted by childish accusations of hate--over issuing that pitbull victims often feel re-traumatized by the images of pitbulls and children (especially families who've had their own children savaged and even killed by these dogs, some of which were doppelgangers of the one in the photo in question). Concern for the emotional and mental well-being of the people who can empathize with KEVIN--who the page is s'posed to be about--the MOST=hate?

I really must've touched on a nerve. That sort of extremism comes from someone who's been unwillingly outed and has to cover their tracks, but has no real means of rebuttal other than going ad hominem at the truth-sayer.
*EDITEDITEDIT the image was not removed, just displaced further down the feed by a decent post of Kevin and Flor AND the puerile you-are-haters paragraph-long-rant (also a bit telling in a group where just about every update that is not about thinly veiled pit-a-ganda is rarely composed of more than a sentence or two)

Well, I may get kicked yet, since I piped in after a request for Kevin's family's contact info, wanting to be sure anything issued forth is ACTUALLY going to the family, and the group seems a bit shady to me...
I think we'll have a definitive answer in the group's recourse. Kick=they are a SCAM.

UPDATE; scam status confirmed.  Other Kevin supporters/victim advocates had the same experience, reading through no less than 20 other accounts of shady behavior and experiences between supporters and the group.  These harassed and silenced voices belong to kind and generous people with their own painful tragedies, who pointed out that images of pitbulls and children are often re-traumatizing and ignite flashbacks, panic attacks, night terrors, anxiety, and PTSD.  (And these flashbacks aren't the stuff of band-aids and soap--we're talking degloved (i.e. traumatically 'skinned'--what happened to KEVIN'S FACE) and/or severed body parts, exposed bone, dangling eyes, crushed bones/skulls, spines ripped out, decapitations...)

...When confronted with the question of where their focus was, what's more important... Kevin, or a dog breed's reputation... they kicked and/or removed commenting ability from anyone sensitive to the pitbull issue (i.e.--Kevin's peers, fellow victims).  In doing so, it is crystal clear where the group's priorities are... and are not

They favor alienating those that help Kevin most to coddle and promote dangerously misleading conceptions about dog behavior and biology (of which, fighting breed dogs have a unique physiology--dog behaviorist and animal professional Alexandra Semyonova describes these scientific and universal traits most succintly in her books and (is quoted) exerpts on dogsbite.org and affiliated blogs).

So, before you open your pocketbook to the FOR THE LOVE OF KEVIN Facebook group, remember that Kevin is NOT priority numero uno.  I recommend trying to contact the Vicente family directly if so inclined.  Unfortunately I do not yet have the means/info to do so.

like battered woman's syndrome... but with more denial and recklessness!

Wow... a day after I write about Kevin, Sport, and horrific pitbull attacks that result in blame, contempt, or apathy for the victims and a perverse, grossly disproportionate frenzy of favor for violent and unpredictable animals...

...comes a gruesome attack on the very sort of cold, ignorant, and/or immature human-specific-sadist that regularly advertises for the breed.  Her rhetoric is typical zealot propaganda tripe such as:

"[posting] on Facebook ... 'There's not [sic] such thing as a dangerous dog. Just a dangerous owner.'
"Another status was accompanied by a picture of a dog with its bottom in the air, reading: ‘To everyone who thinks that pitbulls are mean - you can kiss my hiney.’"

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2577329/Woman-22-left-skull-exposed-horrific-mauling-suspected-pitbull-terrier-disused-quarry.html

Here we have a typical 'holier than thou' animal advocate that fails to address any of the REAL and RELEVANT issues of the breed, while sanctimoniously ignoring or mocking those possessing any real depth of investigation and/or experience about the issue, asserting how allegedly ignorant BSL advocates/pitbull realists are.  Among the universal attributes that emerge with type of person is an angry refusal to read ANYTHING that does not sync with what they want to believe (celebrity sound-bites and surface drivel from sites that *benefit* from advocating the breed). i.e. confirmation bias
Another trait is a propensity to wax on about how 'close-minded' and uneducated a safety advocate is.

So now, one (with a second victim as collateral, I might add) of those staunchly stubborn 'breed ambassadors' has had her chosen breed rip her scalp off and deeply lacerate her face.

will she still insist it is only bad owners that are the problem?
Will she sacrifice her personal character on the altar of pitbull advocacy?

The most disturbing thing is... she just might.
It's happened before.
No, I'm not kidding.

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?id=8605264

Bill Lesinki knew his friend's pitbull since its puppyhood.  Still, that penultimately meant nothing--despite claims that properly socialized pitbulls are no more dangerous than other dogs, or that they *must* be trained/abused to attack, Monster the pitbull attacked someone he was very familiar with, and had no prior incidents of aggression with this man.

"I was just in shock that the dog did this because I was just playing with the dog prior to him biting me - about five minutes prior to that," he said.

Lesinski was visiting his neighbor and, after playing with his pit bull, stopped to take a closer look at his neighbor's stereo.

"I bent over, crouched down to look at the subwoofer, when the dog lunged forward and grabbed me by the face and ripped the front of my face off," he said.

Lesinski's nose was torn off. He was taken to one hospital where doctors tried treating him. But by the time he was transferred to Northwestern Memorial, it was too late for plastic surgeons to re-attach it.

"Basically, I'm going to have to be like this for the next 9-12 months because of ... procedure after procedure that needs to be performed," he said.

He will need at least six surgeries to reconstruct his face which could rack up $200,000 in medical bills. Lesinski just started his own towing business and does not have insurance.

Still, he continues to regurgitate the tired 'it's not the dogs, it's the owners' deflection.  (I wonder what his long-time friend feels about that, since it implies he is a 'bad owner'...)

Sorena and Justin Frostad are another example of how irrational and disturbing pitbull worship can be.  They took the ill advice of pitbull apologists and figured they could introduce their newborn, Ariona, to their pitbulls (in much the same fashion as one would do with other dogs).  They held their child close to the fence so that the dogs could sniff her and familiarize themselves with her scent.

With any other non-fighting breed this would be a perfectly reasonable course of action.  Unfortunately, one of their dogs acted out it's violent genetic heritage and suddenly snapped out--THROUGH the fence--and severed their 2-DAY-old daughter's leg.

"The parents of the mauled Coffeyville infant, Sorena and Justin Frostad, spoke with members of the press several days after the attack. During the interview they refused to answer questions about the pit bulls, and made no mention of the loss of their daughter's leg. In fact, they appeared not to acknowledge the lifelong repercussions of their daughter's missing limb, and their responsibility for the loss."

Even more disturbing is the mother's own written response, which insinuates that, since neither the breed nor herself is at fault, the severing of her baby's girl's leg was nothing more than an 'accident'... and that being the case, there is no cause--according to that un-logic--to stop her from exposing her daughter to pitbulls in the future.  Why else find it so absolutely crucial to continue being a part of the bloody cycle of propaganda and violence?

As a baby, Ariona won't remember the attack or the loss of her leg, but her future is riddled with guaranteed hardships and agony.  How will she feel about pitbulls in the future?  It would stand to reason that, quite reasonably, she would at the very least be compelled to avoid them.  Yet, there's a disturbing possibility she might not...

http://tbo.com/sun-city-center/fundraiser-set-for-amputee-in-sun-city-center-20131113/

Vaughan Chambers was savaged by a pitbull when she was 10 years old.  The dog clamped down to the bone and ripped away the overlaying skin and muscle.  She immediately received 286 stitches and ultimately wound up enduring more than 20 surgeries to save her leg.
Still, that was all in vain.

The problems persisted throughout her life, and at 39 years old, her lower left leg died and was immediately amputated below the knee. The prosthetic to replace it, alone, cost $14,800. Financial devastation is the promise of her initial encounter with pitbulls, just as it is for every pitbull attack survivor.

Despite all this, she is a fierce activist for pitbull propaganda.

http://blog.dogsbite.org/2011/08/2011-fatality-pregnant-pacifica-woman.html

Darla Nappora was a member of BADRAP, perhaps the largest organization manufacturing pitbull falsehoods in the name of deifying the breed.  Her own pitbulls killed her, and thusly also terminated the life of her unborn child.  Yet, when it is so obvious that such a fatal mauling is without rhyme or reason, her widower STILL continued to advocate for the breed that savagely killed his wife and unborn child.  Greg claimed his wife's death was nothing more than a "freak accident".

"They are the most loving animals I have ever had in my life. Whatever happened right now was not the breed's fault," said Napora, who found his wife dead when he returned to the couple's Pacifica home from his construction job with plans to take her to lunch Thursday. "It was just a freak accident."

He even had the dog who ripped Darla's throat out buried with her, and made a spectacle of asserting he forgave the animal.

http://blog.dogsbite.org/2013/12/2013-dog-bite-fatality-valencia-county-woman-killed-by-pit-bull.html

Last year, Michal Nelson was killed by one of the family pets when she entered its pen to break up ice in the dog's water-bowl.  Her body--upon which the dog was perched--was discovered by one of her children.  Like Darla, the pitbull had ripped out Michal's neck.

Boyfriend Nicholas Hare excused, diminished, and dismissed her death, and was far more concerned with the loss of her killer and its peers; (emphasis added here)

Nicholas Hare
This something that came completely out of left field.
I mean, it was her time...
As horrible and tragic as it was, it was…
It's really hard to lose five family members in one day basically [referring to four pit bulls authorities euthanized due to their aggression and his girlfriend{'s death}], because they were our children for years and years.

Not a service breed

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/leeds-dog-attack-emma-bennett-2913587
"Mum-of-four Emma Bennett, 27, was found unconscious at her home in Leeds with horrendous injuries to her head and face...
"Witnesses spoke of “crazy” scenes as up to 30 police officers, including an armed team, descended on the street in Leeds.
"Another shocked neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I saw Emma in the back of the ambulance as paramedics were pounding on her heart. She was just floppy.”
"...it wanted to go for her whenever she was having a fit [epilepsy]."

 A fourth (or is it fifth?) person to be mauled during an epileptic seizure. She is younger than I am, with two more children than I have. This is why pit bull bans make sense. This is why pitbulls are grossly inappropriate for use as service dogs. They are too unstable to handle even a life of gentle love and care at home with the people who cherish and feed them. The last thing a community needs is to have such volatile animals roaming the community at large, forcing their way into venues as "service" dogs to interact with strangers and all sorts of stimuli they are not accustomed to.
 If they are unsafe at home, under good care, where they feel safe, know a routine, have no fears, have no worries, no unmet needs... where on earth can they be a safe companion?

This is why safety advocates protested bringing pitbulls into a school full of small children for more propaganda fluff, ostensibly under the guise of 'literacy'. And what makes these canine critters such excellent tools that aid literacy? What amazing quality is it that somehow is deeply transformative of a child's reading skills?
They "listen".
That's all.

Any other smaller, safer breed could "listen". Fanatics trumpet "any dog can bite" as if it were a legitimate and powerful counterpoint to gruesome and grievous pitbull attacks....*  well, then, "any dog can listen". Something that does not pose great risk of dismembering children without provocation. Any animal incapable of tearing children apart could be a substitute. Why not a "literacy hamster"? They can "listen". Even a pet rock made of dung would be more appropriate.

 (in itself a fallacy; yes, any dog can bite, but the end result is NOT the same. hell, even plants can 'bite'--venus flytrap--ergo, the ability to bite does NOT define equality or similarity with a specific animal or breed)
Many pitbull fanatics brag about how they skirt bans and ordinances by obfuscating their dog's breed or arbitrarily registered it as a service dog, in hopes of using the legal system to impose their will, and their dogs on the public.  Some are deluded enough to genuinely beleive these animals are great service dogs, on par with any other service animal.
A bloody and escalating history of violence would beg to differ.  Even discounting all attacks on humans and non-canine animals, the fact remains that these dogs have an undeniable neurosis for 'going game' on other dogs.  It's what they were bred for, excel at, and succumb to most frequently.

REAL guide dogs, of time-tested temperament to excel in this line of work are frequently attacked by pitbulls.  Many do not survive.  These are animals that spent hundreds of hours being trained and earning experience in what they do.  Their testing was complex and lengthy--a hard-won prize, and they have no parallel.
By contrast, pitbull 'service dogs' are of the Cracker Jack variety; a person sends a paltry amount of money to register their dog as a service dog--with no training, no testing, no verification--slap a vest on their animal, mislead and falsely advertise the breed.  The result is in epileptics being caught unawares and grossly mauled--a few even unto death--because of the pitbull service dog farce.

A TRUE service/guide dog must be able to accompany their charge anywhere and everywhere--which means they will be out and about in the community, exposed to all sorts of environs, people, and animals.  It makes no sense to task a breed that cannot stand to be around other dogs/with a psychotic compulsion to kill other dogs with such circumstances that set them up to fail--and inflict a lot of collateral damage.

Dog breeds are tailor made for their tasks, their tasks are an element of conduct, and ergo, their behaviors are a product of their breeding.
Pitbulls were bred to spontaneously and unrelentingly tear other animals apart, and the rising death toll issues that they perceive humans to be in that category.  Their aggression is neurotic and generalized (NOT animal/dog specific).  If someone TRULY loved the breed/their pitbull, they would realistically manage their expectations for the dog and operate with a 'big picture' perspective allowing for the breed-specific tendencies of their animal.

Pitbulls are a horrific mismatch with the task of being a service dog, as poor a pairing as expecting a teacup chihuahua to herd sheep, a pug to retrieve water fowl, a dachshund to race, a greyhound to pull arctic sled teams, or a Pomeranian to take down wild boars.  These are simple facts of reason, common sense, and biology.

This is how they will lick you to death

Some thoughts on another's FB post;

considering all the attacks (body parts torn off and reduced to insalvagable hamburger) and fatalities this year, this child got off 'light'. There's nothing 'light' about this. What this is... is tragic, and frustratingly preventable. This girl, along with hundreds of other grievously wounded/killed people (often children) is why I find the 'lick you to death' diversion/cop-out extremely offensive. Anyone who utters such words with seriousness behind them, automatically winds up on my $h*t list until they wise up, acquire a little bit of humanity/compassion, and grow a brain.

Many erroneously trust in the safety of proximity to the breed, fostered by the lick-you-to-death misconception... like this man... and he lost most of his tongue for it;  http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/23083854/man-loses-portion-of-his-tongue-in-dog-attack

Wholly deceived by the propaganda, and with the additional amelioration of years and years of non-aggression that lull people into a false sense of security... a friend of mine lost her child, to a dog named "Kissy Face" because she loved to lick "kiss" (hurk!) so much. Her two year old baby boy was decapitated by Kissy Face; and as she succumbed to the horror of the situation, she (Kissy) began mauling his lifeless body all over again.
http://blog.dogsbite.org/2013/12/video-mother-of-fatal-pit-bull-attack.html

The phrase 'lick you to death' is a blight upon the most innocent and helpless of humanity, and a tell-tale indicator of either gross ignorance or greatly deluded, pompous narcissism (lion-tamer complex).
